Sony has been gearing up for their next installation of the Spider-man franchise. Marketing for the film has slowly been ramping up with posters, trailers and more being fed to fans that are becoming increasingly eager to see how the film plays out on screen. Andrew Garfield is set to return as Peter Parker/ Spider-Man. His approach to the role has garnered some praise while others feel he is just “too cool” to be play the geeky Peter Parker. His take on Spider-Man is what has won many fans over. His witty lines when under the mask have many feeling they are getting the Spider-Man they know from their beloved comics. Director Marc Webb has given us a fresh take on Spider-Man that, while truthful to the source material, has a few alterations to the Spider-Man canon in order to spice things up a bit. Webb seems to be focused on pulling viewers in with the continuing mystery of Peter Parker’s parents and the continued growth of Oscorp into a threat to New York City and it’s residents. The first film reintroduced us to Spider-Man and the Spider-Man world while pulling in $752,216,557 at the box office but can The Amazing Spider-Man 2 build of that Success and deliver the goods?

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is expected to make BIG money at the box office. The pressure is on Sony to succeed after the decision was made back around 2010 to cancel the Sam Raimi directed “Spider-man 4″which was set to have star Tobey McGuire return for his 4th take on Spider-Man/Peter Parker. The film fell apart after a rumored rift between Sony. Raimi was rumored to be extremely agitated by the script, going through 4 revisions and never being happy with what he read. For the film Raimi considered showcasing the transformation of Dr. Connors into the Lizard, with Dylan Baker reprising his role as the college professor of Peter Parker. He also had plans to upgrade Bruce Campbell to a more significant role. Campbell had appeared in cameos in all 3 prior installations. In December 2009, it was reported that John Malkovich was in talks to play the Vulture, with Anne Hathaway playing Felicia Hardy. The script was rumored to be moving in a new direction with the character by having Hardy become “Vulturess” instead of the familiar Black Cat. Raimi would later refute that rumor claiming Felicia Hardy would have become the Black Cat. Raimi’s dismissal did not sit well with fans of the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. Sony wanted badly to erase the public’s mind of Spider-Man 3, which saw Spidey take on Venom (played by Topher Grace, Harry Osborn as the new Green Goblin (even though he looked more like someone dressed to play paintball riding a flying snowboard) played by the returning James Franco and The Sandman played by Thomas Haden Church. In order to erase the mistakes of Spider-man 3 the studios decided to reboot and have a new director give us a new take on the franchise. Hence, Webb and cast were brought in to get the job done. Webb’s first installment fared well with audiences split on the film. Rotten currently grades it as 73% fresh while other critics panned the film and deemed it an unnecessary reboot.

Now, for the second attempt, Webb has decided to up the ante (and change the Spider-Man outfit to a suit as close to the original concept from the comics as you can get). The original cast will mostly return with some additions being added into the mix. Jamie Foxx will play the villainous Electro with Paul Giamatti as The Rhino, Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn and Dane Dehaan as Harry Osborn. The film advertisements so far have given hints that the supervillain team the Sinister Six may play a part in the film. Several clues and tips have been given by Sony through their marketing for the film to work fans of Spider-Man into a frenzy before the film is released. A Tumblr page was created to pose as the Daily Bugle’s website and several easter eggs have been placed into trailers to boost interest for the film. So far the Daily Bugle Tumblr has hinted several characters such as  Kate Cushing, Detective Stan Carter,  the “Big Man”,  Izzy Bunsen,  Joy Mercado,  Donald Menken,  the Vulture, Hydroman, Spencer Smythe, Ned Leeds,  Anne Weying, J. Jonah Jameson, Shocker, Alistair Smythe, Doc Ock, Eddie Brock, The Enforcers, and Puma .Even a mention of cloning was made which could be a possible hint of the use of “The Clone Saga” story arc from the Spider-Man comics.  There have been talks of rumored spinoffs and Sony studios confirmed that 2 more sequels will be made after Amazing 2. The spinoffs are rumored to be Sinister Six and Venom films. Sony is said to be looking to expand the Spider-Man universe with spinoffs of heroes and anti-heroes from the Spider-Man universe.

They next obvious question is, can Sony pull it off? Can they build an entire shared universe for Spider-Man and his supporting cast of characters? The idea will be put to the test in Amazing 2. The film is set to possibly feature 3 or 4 villains with Electro and Rhino confirmed for the film and Harry Osborn appearing in what looks like Green Goblin-like attire in the trailers shown up to date. There very well could be cameos of more villains from the Spider-Man rogues gallery if the rumors and clues given up to date do hold any significant amount of weight. This leaves many fans worried. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 flopped and many believe that it was mostly due to the large amount of villains in the film and no time to flesh out their stories properly. Can we be seeing Webb and his Spider-man films going down the same path? Electro is expected to the role as the main villain in the film but how will it play out having the other villains around causing mayhem. Electro will be given screen time to develop the character who transforms from a nerdy, mild mannered scientist into Electro after a lab accident at Oscorp.

Does the push for a shared Spider-Man universe mean we may see a shared universe among all marvel films such as The Avengers? Rumors were rampant during filming of Amazing Spider-Man 2 that Spider-Man was set to make a cameo in The Avengers. A deal was rumored to be set between Sony and Marvel Studios that would allow Spider-Man to make an appearance in “The Avengers” film. It is also rumored the deal fell through. Does this mean we may see it happen further down the road? Well, according to Amazing Spider-Man producer Avi Arad we won’t see that happen any time soon. “I for one don’t see the value for us in it. I think we’re doing such a good job with the Spider-Man Universe. Spider-Man is arguably the number one character in the world. He shouldn’t make a cameo.” said Arad of the possibility of a cameo for Spider-Man in an Avengers film.

One thing is certain; The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is just the beginning of a master plan by Webb and Sony Studios. Whether or not they get a chance to go through with their plans lies solely on the success of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at the box office. If Spider-Man’s hometown fans in NYC are any indication of the films chances, then the film may be heading for record numbers when it hits the big screen. NYC has served as the principle area of shooting for the film. This has created a bit of a stir in NYC about the next installment of Spider-Man. Now if the can get everyone else to buy in then they’re in good shape.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres May 2nd.
